Herceg Bosna was a self-proclaimed Croatian entity that existed within the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995. It was established on November 18, 1991, during the Yugoslav Wars, and its name translates to "Duke's Bosnia" in English.
The creation of Herceg Bosna was driven by ethnic tensions between Bosniaks, Croats, and Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Bosnian Croats, who had been fighting alongside the Bosniaks against the Bosnian Serbs, felt that they were not receiving equal representation in the central government and decided to create their own entity.
Herceg Bosna was recognized by Croatia but was not recognized by the international community. It was dissolved in 1994 when the Bosnia and Herzegovina Croats agreed to a federation with the Bosniaks, which ultimately led to the signing of the Dayton Accords in 1995.
The establishment of Herceg Bosna was controversial and has been criticized for being a step towards the ethnic partition of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its legacy is still felt in the region, particularly in the ongoing political tensions between the Bosniak and Croat communities.
